Finally got past chapter 3 of a book I’ve been meaning to read all year. Usually I get through 2 pages and I’m out, but this week I made it to the part on unfinished conversations and it stuck with me.
The idea: your brain treats an unresolved exchange like an open task, so it keeps circling back at night the same way an unchecked to-do item nags at you. That’s exactly what’s been happening — lying there at 11pm replaying something a coworker said at 2pm like there’s still an answer I’m supposed to find.
What I didn’t expect: the book said writing down how you’d actually want the conversation to end, even one line, can close that loop the same way finishing the real conversation would. Not fixing anything with the other person, just giving your own head an ending.
Tried it 2 nights this week after rough shifts — one sentence before bed instead of running the same 5 minutes over and over. Didn’t knock me out, but both nights I was asleep by 11:40pm instead of still awake past midnight.
Not sure it holds up after a harder week, but for now…
