Usually I drive to get my kid from practice because by that time of day I don’t feel like being upright for long, but tonight I left the car and walked.

Same street I drive past without really seeing it, and on foot everything slows down — the pink house with the red roof, someone’s motorbike leaning against the curb like it’s been there for ages, the sky going that flat grey-blue it does right before it’s properly dark.
Nothing happened. I just walked, picked up my kid, walked back. My legs were tired in a different way than my back usually is, which felt like a trade worth making.
Might start doing this on the nights I don’t have anywhere else to be after.
