No idea where to start at this age

Went hiking with an old friend again this weekend, same trail we’ve done plenty of times since I retired.

Going up was fine. Coming down, my legs were shaking so bad by the bottom I had to stop twice just to steady myself.

Used to walk miles a day for work without thinking about it (never once thought about my legs back then). Now a few hours on a trail leaves me sore for days after.

There’s also been a lot more time lately in hospital waiting rooms with my mother, and those stiff plastic chairs don’t do the joints any favors either. Feels like my whole body just wears out faster than it used to.

I keep thinking I should start some kind of strength training so the legs hold up better on the way down, but I don’t know where to even begin at this age. Everything I look up online seems to be written for people either way younger or way further along than I am.

Anyone here start from pretty much nothing later in life, and what did you actually do first?
