sorting bills across accounts

So my paycheck lands, then it splits off into what feels like a handful of different directions before I even see it — insurance premium, retirement contribution, the usual bills, and then whatever’s left just kind of evaporates on groceries and gas.

I’ve tried lumping it all into one big “expenses” category in my budgeting app and that told me nothing useful, so now I’m wondering if folks break things out by fixed versus variable, or by need versus want, or something else entirely (genuinely open to whatever works for you).

The part that really throws me off is the stuff that doesn’t show up every month — car repairs, a co-pay, gifts around the holidays. Do you set those aside in their own little category, or just let them blend into whatever bucket is closest.

Also curious how anyone manages this with a long commute eating up a good chunk of the evening. By the time I’m home I don’t have much left in me to sit down and reconcile anything, so it just piles up until the weekend (if I even get to it then).

What’s actually worked for you folks, and did it take long to stick?
