jog/walk ratio, when to switch?

3 days into this jog-walk routine around the block, jogging to one mailbox then walking to the next, over and over. My street has 14 mailboxes before I turn around, and right now I’m jogging past 7 of them and walking the rest.

What I don’t get is when to shift that ratio. Is there a sign to watch for, like breathing settling down before the next one, or legs not complaining the next morning, or do people just bump the jogging up by one mailbox a week regardless and let the body catch up.

Also not sure the advice even applies when my ‘jog’ is closer to a slow shuffle than an actual run. Does the ratio thing still work at that pace, or am I overthinking something that doesn’t apply to me yet?

I’ve been doing almost this same thing for a few weeks now, jogging lamp post to lamp post instead of mailboxes, and honestly watching my breathing worked better for me than switching things up on a fixed schedule. If I’m still breathing hard a post or two after I’ve switched to walking, that’s telling me it’s not time to bump the ratio yet.
