[Did] Reading on my commute instead of scrolling

My commute is 90 minutes each way and for the longest time I just spent the whole thing scrolling my phone, nothing in particular, just scrolling. Told myself back in January this was the year I’d read more and then did nothing about it for months.

Finally started keeping an actual paperback in my bag and forcing myself to open it on the bus instead of my phone. No other rule than that, just had to be a real book, not an app.

First week was kind of annoying honestly, I’d catch myself reaching for my phone out of habit a few times a ride. By week 2 it got easier. Did this for 3 weeks straight and actually finished a full book, something like 280 pages, which I haven’t managed in ages with work and my kid’s stuff eating up everything else.

Soap Bath
Modern Bathroom

Didn’t fix the bigger problem of barely having time that’s just mine, still working on that part. But the 90 minutes stopped feeling like dead time.

The cats still don’t care either way, they’re just waiting by the door when I get home like always.

That first week of catching yourself reaching for the phone out of habit is so real, is it more the boredom or the physical habit of holding the phone that pulls you back? I’ve been doing the same mindless scroll between filling out job applications lately and keep wondering if swapping in a book would actually stick past the rough start for me.

the paperback only rule makes sense, a phone with an ebook app on it is still a phone in your hand ugh. I tried the same thing on my train home and only made it through 90 pages so far, so finishing a whole book like that sounds like real progress to me

finished a full book on the commute alone is great, congrats. I only got through 90 pages on my train so this is motivating
